I grow deeply weary of headlines like this:

The fear-mongering is so blatant.  I grow angry at headlines like this:

BURNING BIBLES IN PORTLAND

It lays open their lies about “love and equality.”  I fear liars because their lies make interaction impossible.  Anger is my secondary reaction to the uncertainty created by their lies.

Yesterday I drove across the upper canyon deserts of Utah – from Grand Junction, Colorado to Richfield, Utah.  It is a stark and almost completely uninhabited landscape.  It is hauntingly beautiful with its rock formations and canyons – but it is also hundred of miles between even sanitary stops on a major U.S. Interstate highway.  This is not rural, this is nowhere.  One should be afraid in an environment like that, no water, no food, no nothing.  And yet I found it soothing.  The absence of people was deeply refreshing.

I am not afraid of the virus, or of the storm.  I have weathered storms; I have rebuilt after earthquakes.  I have lost loved ones and been close to death myself.  It’s not “the world” that I fear – it is people.  It is people’s reactions to the virus, to the storm, to whatever difficulty that confronts them that frightens me.

Look, I’m a redneck at heart.  My grandfather actually was a farmer.  I woodwork for a hobby and have just bought a retirement home in the Smokey Mountains of East Tennessee where I intend to reside full time when I do retire.  I own guns.  My redneck credentials are good – not great, but good.

It is a favorite game of the left to hold up silly, idiotic rednecks as if they are representative of the conservative movement.  They are not, they the fringe.  I hate this game.  Every decent conservative I know, and all that I only read, denounce racism at every turn, debunk conspiracy theories whenever possible, and generally stay away from the silly redneck fringe as much as humanly possible.

So, when one of the conservatives movements brightest, in this case Jim Geraghty, edges close to this game, I get upset.  All through the pandemic he has been quoting a medical professional reader on commonsense things to do.  It has been good stuff.  But this morning’s Jolt is titled, “It’s Time for Conservatives to Take the New Coronavirus Outbreak Seriously.”

I think everybody short of the silly redneck fringe does.  Says his reader:

Gripe all you want about Fauci and Cuomo and Whitmer and all the weenies at CNN; I’ll be there with you. But we all need to continue acting responsibly while the coronavirus is still around. Wear a mask (properly!) when you’re at the store or in any other enclosed public space. Wash your hands frequently. Stay home if you feel sick and get tested if you have symptoms. And don’t cheerlead for the radio talkers who are trying to whip up this new Resistance.

Simply be responsible. Don’t do it for the [expletive] governor — do it for your uncle with a heart condition, do it for the sports star who beat cancer, and do it for the nice old ladies at church.

I woke up this morning with the unmistakable image of George Floyd’s death in my mind; HOWEVER, it was the state of California lying on the ground and  Gavin Newsom was the guy with his knee on the neck.

As I have said, I am travelling – by car.  California is in the rear-view for a few more days yet.  Spent yesterday afternoon with some extended family and the day before with some very long time friends.  I was struck by the remarkably different attitudes they exhibited compared to what I commonly experience in California.  I wrote about attitudes and coping on Tuesday.  The contrast just keeps getting more and more stark.  California wants to grant more shutdown benefits.  How they intend to pay for them, I have no idea – California cannot even print money.  But more importantly it illustrates how differently California is approaching the virus.

California is trying not to die, most of the rest of the country is trying to live.

California policy has a lot to do with that.  When the powers-that-be stifle efforts to live at seemingly every turn, you really only have two choices – buy into the fear or get angry.  Most people are going to buy into the fear because you just cannot stay angry that much.

As I thought about this, something Jesus said came to mind:
